2004. Afectados por el Nemagon.
This is the story of the social movement of Nicaraguan “bananeros” - the peons of banana plantations. Having been worked for decades in the plantations of Chinandega’s region with a salary of about US$1 per day, “bananeros” discovered they were being poisoned by a toxic pesticide, called “Nemagòn.” This toxic pesticide has been used since the early 70s in all the banana plantations of Latin America. Male sterility, tumours, genetic deformities and premature obsolescence are just some of the injuries that these people suffer after coming into contact with the pesticide. After initial investigations, they discovered that the multinational, production companies of Nemagòn were already aware of its toxic effects before exporting it to Nicaragua. Ever since the afectados por el Nemagòn (the injured by Nemagòn) got together in the Asotraexdan (Asociaciòn de Trabajadores y Ex Trabajadores Afectados por el Nemagòn), they have begun demanding compensation from the multinational companies through Nicaraguan and US Justice Courts. Italia-Nicaragua association follows the struggle of Chinandega's bananeros.
Here I present the works that I did in Nicaragua in 2004:
