CityOfKids is a research project that I developed in Rio de Janeiro between February and May 2007.
Here a booklet presenting the research: it's available both in english and italian language.
Here a gallery of extremely modified images that I took in favela Rocinha - Rio de Janeiro. I altered the colors of the images using Photoshop as a tool to
express my point of view on the favela, a point of view that I reached
at the end of a visual sociological research. Rio de
Janeiro is ominous of a disturbing fate shared by megalopolis all over
the world: huge cities where large physical and imaginary areas are
completely out of control and are stages for conflicts that on turn will
change the very features of our world. These images could just as
likely portray suburbs of Indian megalopolis as well as Palestinian
refugee camps, Brasilian favelas as well as the outskirts of our
western cities; all sharing a common, disturbing and more and more
likely future.
Here another gallery of picture coming from favela Rocinha, where I taught photography for 3 moths in a primary school. Kids themselves took the pictures using discardable
cameras. They tell the story of their lives, of the faces
they see everyday, of the spaces they inhabit, of their parents, their
neighbors, their brothers and sisters.
Here are the videos (part 1 - part 2) where I present the images that I captured in favela Rocinha (Rio de
Janeiro). Photos are extremely modified; images are edited with the
music, composed and recorded by Scum for this slideshow.
If you're interested, you can ask me for the full research paper. It's available only in italian language.
